John McTiernan is best known as the director of action movies like Die Hard, in which a cop goes up against terrorists, busts the bad guys, and saves his wife and all the other hostages. Now, John McTiernan is on the wrong side of the law. McTiernan was sentenced to a year in jail on perjury charges, though he remains free on appeal pending the results of a few other filings in court.
McTiernan was busted as part of the famous Hollywood wiretapping case of Anthony Peliciano, the private detective who was sentenced to jail for his wiretapping exploits, spying on the rich and famous for the other rich and famous. Peliciano was hired by McTiernan to spy on movie executive Charles Roven, who McTiernan was producing a movie for. McTiernan had grown suspicous of Roven and wanted to keep tabs on him, which is hard to do while directing, but harder to do from jail.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Daniel Saunders, the prosecutor in the case, said that the jail time demonstrates the functionality of American justice. He said, “regardless of a person’s status, lying to law enforcement and to a federal court are serious crimes that compromise the integrity of the justice system and are deserving of punishment.”
