It’s not terribly often that Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Jimmy Carter would agree on something, but here it is. In 1979, Carter installed 32 solar panels on the White House grounds, including a water heater. In 2003, President Bush very quietly added three solar power systems to the White House infrastructure, including one to heat the Presidential swimming pool. Now, Barack Obama is the latest President to green up the White House, adding solar panels to the White House roof and a new solar hot water heater for the White House’s residential wing.
Of course, the White House is only one of many famous residences to get a green-washing. If the Pope can stick up solar panels everywhere in Vatican City, it shouldn’t require a big public display of pomp and circumstance for Obama to put up some solar panels on the White House, yet here we are. Hopefully the solar panels will also work at night.
The next step in greening DC is to install a hot air collection system in Congress. A good filibuster should be enough to power a hundred homes!
