There’s a new name at the top at Twitter. Twitter, the micro-blogging service that has proven to be immensely popular, first named Evan Williams as CEO two years ago, and during his time at the helm Twitter has undergone a massive new redesign and has grown in users from 3 million to 160 million. Now, Evan Williams is stepping aside at the company he help founded, so new CEO Dick Costolo can move the company in a new direction, bring advertisers on board, and turn Twitter from a great idea to a great business.
“I have always been more of a product guy and we are entering a new phase of the company where we require a CEO who is more into operations, sales, finance and operations,” said Williams, who tweets as @Ev. “And Dick is better at those things than I am.” Both Williams and Costolo have previously headed technology companies; Williams sold Blogger to Google in 2007, and Costolo sold Google Feedburner in 2003; neither man is willing to discuss whether or not Twitter is going to be sold to Google, given an IPO, or staying private.
