It was a nice attempt while it lasted. About 18 months ago, Frito-Lay’s healthy chip brand, SunChips, changed their bags to a new biodegradable, recyclable bag from the traditional plastic bag. The move, at the time, was hailed as a big step forward for the food industry. Single-serving chip bags are very wasteful, and a compostable version would’ve been a big help in reducing landfill clutter. Unfortunately, Frito-Lay and SunChips are changing back to traditional packaging, after 18 months of complaints about the noise of the environmentally-friendly SunChips bags.
“Clearly, we’d received consumer feedback that it was noisy,” says Frito-Lay spokeswoman Aurora Gonzalez. “We recognized from the beginning that the bag felt, looked and sounded different. We are on a journey with compostable packaging. We are applying what we have learned from this first generation to get to the next generation of environmentally friendly packaging.”
Not all the SunChips are going back to the old way of packaging. Five of the flavors are going back to the old way; the most popular flavor (original) is sticking with the recyclable packaging, for now. You have to give Frito-Lay some credit for trying new things in the name of health, both human health and environmental health.
