When it comes to dressing up for Halloween, everyone can get into the act. By and large, any excuse to wear a costume is a good one. Dressing up is so fun, apparently even potatoes are getting into the act. The Purple Majesty is an antioxidant-rich purple potato that’s going on sale in the UK at Sainsbury’s, just in time for Halloween. As the name might tell you, it’s obnoxiously, deeply, richly purple, from its skin to its core and all throughout the starchy root vegetable.
What’s the benefit of the purple potato? Well, for one, it’s purple. For two, it’s still got the taste and texture of a normal potato. The third benefit of this weird cultivar of potato, created by Colorado University, is that it is high in antioxidants. A Purple Majesty has nine times the antioxidant content of a standard potato, making it a much healthier, cancer fighting option (especially when paired with black rice and dark chocolate).
I have to own up to the fact that I really want to get some purple potatoes and sweet potatoes and make purple and gold French fries in honor of my alma mater. It’s too hard to resist this urge, so I may as well give into it once I find a purple spud.
