Two years ago, Caitlin Sanchez, then 12 years old, took on the role of her dreams. The child of Cuban immigrants, Caitlin grew up watching the adventures of Dora The Explorer. When the show needed a new voice for Dora, Caitlin was chosen out of 600 other actresses to take on the character of the beloved children’s icon. Now, two years later, Sanchez claims she feels more like Dora The Exploited and is suing Nickelodeon and Viacom for millions of dollars in pay she claims producers wrongly withheld from her.
“Defendants used Caitlin, unjustly enriching themselves of millions of dollars in profits from the series and branded products, which Caitlin performed and promoted,” the suit against Nickelodeon and parent company Viacom claims. The Sanchez family claims they only had 22 minutes to look over the contract, that Caitlin gets only $40 per day while traveling and making personal appearances for the program, and that she was not compensated for hundreds of hours recording voices for the show.
“I’ve never seen as convoluted and inscrutable a contract as I’ve seen here,” said Caitlin’s lawyer, John Balestriere, to the New York Daily News.
