When it comes to socializing technology, who do you think of as being ahead of the curve? In general, I think of the Japanese. I mean, they have virtual girlfriends and robot priests and all kinds of other socializing robots, so why wouldn’t they be the country with the largest collection of online friends? As it turns out, the Japanese aversion to socializing continues onto the online world, as the average Japanese person has the fewest amount of online friends with only 29 friends!
The country that leads the planet in social networking consumption, according to a survey done by TNS, is Malaysia. Malaysians have the most amount of online friends and spend the most time per week using social networks, with a staggering 9 hours per week spent browsing the social web. Russians spend 8 hours on social networking websites. Consumers now spend more time on social networks than they do reading email.
