The tunnel has been finished, with the rescue tube in place. Overnight, at a rate of about one every hour, the 33 Chilean miners that have been trapped underground are being rescued, one by one. At the time of this writing, seven of them have been lifted to safely, but more are being pulled out as we speak. One of the most miraculous survival stories ever is coming to an end, and it looks as though it is going to be a happy ending for all involved. CNN has live streaming video of the rescue attempts here, and there’s also an updating news blog detailing the Chilean mine rescues as they happen.
It takes a heart-stopping 15 minutes for miners to be raised from the underground rescue station to the surface. The metal capsule speeds along at 2.3 feet per second, but when you’re climbing 3000 feet, it’s going to take awhile. The miners put on an oxygen mask for their climb, to help their lungs get used to the surface air, and all the miners are wearing sunglasses to shield their eyes from the brightness of the surface versus their pitch-black cavern home of the past 3 months.
