Remember yesterday’s UFO sighting in Manhattan? Well, it turns out that it’s not an actual UFO, nor is it some prankster pulling one over on Manhattan’s more gullible souls. What caused a UFO frenzy was actually a bunch of balloons tied together to celebrate an engagement. At art teacher Andrea Craparo’s engagement party at an elementary school in Westchester, there were bundles of iridescent pearl balloons brought in by a parent. One bunch of 40 escaped. Manhattan’s UFO was just a celebratory bundle of 40 balloons that got away from a parent’s grasp.
The kids had a good laugh over the case of mistaken identity, as are school staff. “UFO? They’re crazy – those are our balloons!” said Angela Freeman, head of the Milestone School in Mount Vernon. “To me it was the most automatic thing. But it’s all over YouTube.”
Helium balloons change shape at high altitudes, which explains why the bunch had such an odd appearance. Everything else can be explained away by wind patterns and the like. Balloons can be seen, but they don’t show up on radar, which explains why LaGuardia didn’t see them. It all makes sense now!
