It’s one of the defining movies of the 1980’s. For the United States Navy, it was the greatest recruting tool that could have ever been written. For a youngster, it was the most awesome job anyone could ever have. In retrospect, it’s one of the most latently homoerotic movies ever written. It’s that blast from the past, the cheesy 80’s classic Top Gun. And guess what? There’s going to be a Top Gun sequel, and Tom Cruise WILL be back as Maverick!
Not only will Tom Cruise make his return, but also involved are screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and director Tony Scott. It’s like a mini-Top Gun reunion; all you need to add is Val Kilmer! The mind behind the project is producer David Ellison, son of Oracle founder Larry Ellison and himself a stunt pilot (probably because of Top Gun). He recently raised $350 million to finance films and struck a first-look deal with Paramount, where he and Cruise will be working together on the upcoming spy caper Mission Impossible IV.
