Multiculturalism is a long-held sticking point for certain elements of every population in the world. No matter what country, there’ll be someone that says that immigrants need to learn how to be like us, not like how they were in their old country. That’s why the public school system was founded, and that turned out okay. However, in Germany, the growing feeling is that multikulti, or multiculturalism, has failed. The leader of this movement, the Christian Democratic Union and Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Said Chancellor Merkel, “The beginning of the 1960s our country called the foreign workers to come to Germany and now they live in our country. We kidded ourselves a while. We said: ‘They won’t stay, [after some time] they will be gone,’ but this isn’t reality. And of course, the approach [to build] a multicultural [society] and to live side by side and to enjoy each other … has failed, utterly failed.” However, she followed that line up with, “We should not be a country which gives the impression to the outside world that those who don’t speak German immediately or who were not raised speaking German are not welcome here.”
So basically, you’re welcome to move to Germany if you’re willing to learn how to become German and are willing to embrace your new culture, rather than forcing your new culture to be like your old homeland.
