MythBusters, the popular edutainment program in which a team of scientists work to separate the truth from the fiction when it comes to popular tales of scientific achievements both historical and modern, are taking on the myth that Archimedes used mirrors to direct sunlight onto incoming Roman ships to burn them before they could reach the shore. They’ll have their usual crew, plus one special guest. President Barack Obama is making a guest appearance on MythBusters on December 8.
It’s all part of the Obama administration’s renewed interest in math, science, and technology, and he’ll be talking more about his upcoming TV guest shot at the White House Science Fair. “If you win the NCAA championship, you come to the White House,” Obama said when announcing the science fair last year. “Well, if you’re a young person and you produce the best experiment or design, the best hardware or software, you ought to be recognized for that achievement, too.”
Plus, it’s another television appearance for Obama, who just loves to get on TV whenever possible. If it can actually do some good, that’s even better for the state of the nation.
