The northern end of the island of the Philippines is suffering even as we speak. That area of the island, specifically the provinces of Cagayan and Isabela, is right in the path of the first super-typhoon of the season. Typhoon Megi, with sustained winds of over 150 miles-per-hour, is the Pacific version of a Category 5 Hurricane. As such, the Philppines is preparing for disaster.
Thousands of people have been evacuated from the coastal areas, which also happens to contain most of the country’s crucial rice harvest. Farmers were reportedly urged to stay to the last minute to harvest, then to get out as safely as possible in an attempt to preserve some of the country’s food crop. Cagayan and Isabela have been preemptively declared as “state of calamity” zones by the government. It doesn’t take much storm power to cause huge problems, but the fact that this storm is so huge is troublesome for Filipinos.
