The positive health benefits of drinking a moderate amount of alcohol have been pretty well established. Heart patients swear by their red wine. My grandfather, in his older years, had todrink two cans of beer a day to improve his kidney functioning. More and more, hospitals are seeing the light and moving towards a culture that’s less restrictive towards drinking, with some hospitals actually allowing patients, friends, and family to bring in a six pack or a bottle of wine with doctor permission.
Among the leaders of the BYOB hospital movement are Henry County Medical Center in Paris, Tennessee, and the Parkview Ortho Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Association for Healthcare Foodservice actually supplies alcohol to hospitals on a regular basis. “We keep a ‘beer log’ detailing what comes in and goes out of our department,” says AHF president Denisa Cate, adding that hospitals keep alcohol on hand for the treatment of the DTs and other alcoholic withdrawal symptoms.
Really, there’s no better place to tie one on than a place where they can pump your stomach, give you aspirin, and take care of your vomiting with handy-dandy bedpan service.
