Starbucks is nothing if not innovative. They’re the first company to bring $5 coffee to the masses. They were on the forefront of the wifi and high-speed internet front (and finally started to give wifi away for free after selling it for a little too long). They even have their own coffee language! Now they’re leading the way when it comes to digital content and store-branded entertainment thanks to the launch of an in-store entertainment hub called the Starbucks Digital Network.
“The vision is for Starbucks Digital Network to be a digital version of the community cork board that’s in all of our stores,” said Starbucks VP of Digital Ventures Adam Brotman. “Tens of millions of customers are coming in to our stores and logging in to our WiFI on a monthly basis anyways. They’re coming in because we provide this great experience — good music overhead, quality food and coffee and the opportunity to connect with your friends or the baristas … What we hope is that this is a nice complement to that experience.”
The service, powered by Yahoo, features six different channels to choose from: News, Entertainment, Wellness, Business and Careers, My Neighborhood, and a customizable Starbucks channel. The channels are optimized for use on smart phones and touchscreen devices, offer content in the blink of an eye, and are even ‘snackable,’ meaning that while you’re standing in line, you can get some use out of the SDN.
