People who are skilled in one arena inevitably believe they can take their skill and translate it to pretty much any other venture they want. Rappers want to be athletes; athletes want to be rappers. Musicians act, and actors want to play music. It doesn’t make sense, but that’s what life is like for the rich and bored. Joining the fake rap career of Joaquin Phoenix is the real country music career of Gwyneth Paltrow. Paltrow, who stars as a down-on-her-luck country singer in the upcoming film Country Strong, is going to appear on the Country Music Association Awards, but not as a presenter. Paltrow will be singing her single “Country Strong” on the CMAs, backed up by legitimate musician Vince Gill.
I could blame Jeff Bridges for this, thanks to his Oscar-winning turn as a country singer. I could blame Phoenix and his weird mockumentary stunt. But no, I choose to blame Nashville for this. Someone got in Gwynny’s ear, dropped this idea into her head, and boom, we’ve got “Country Strong” from a Hollywood lifer. Let’s take a listen, shall we?
This is pretty much everything that’s wrong with country music these days, and everything that makes people hate country music. Sappy lyrics, soulless production, sickly-sweet pop instrumentation… yup, it’s a Nashville joint all right.
