According to the business plan of Bible.com Incorporated, the focus of Bible.com and its business plan is a simple one. As it says, “It is the goal of the board of directors of Bible.com to become very, very profitable.” Unfortunately for Bible.com’s owners, Roy Spencer “Bud” Miller and Betty Miller, Bible.com hasn’t been profitable enough for investor James Solakian, who is suing the company for lack of profits. I imagine a business plan that boils down to “make a lot of money” without having any real plan on how to do so might have something to do with the problem.
If Sex.com is worth $13 million, how much do you think Bible.com Inc could get for their domain name? If I had to guess, quite a lot. If they’re not able to make any money off of Bible.com while running the business with Christian principles, as is their goal, then maybe this lawsuit is an attempt to get the Bible’s website into more profitable hands. Right now the site just features a Bible verse of the day, links to commonly-asked Bible questions with answers, and lots and lots of ads.
Bud and Betty Miller purchased the URL in 1996 for $50; I can only imagine how much it’d get on the open market right now. Just the bidding war from televangelists would be jaw-dropping.
