Mel Gibson was supposed to get a career bump from his appearance in The Hangover 2. His role, as a tattoo artist, was supposed to be as scene-stealing and revitalizing as the Mike Tyson cameo in The Hangover. The key word in that sentence is was, as Mel Gibson has been fired from The Hangover 2, despite the support of director Todd Phillips and Legendary Pictures/Warner Brothers.
“I thought Mel would have been great in the movie,” said Phillips. “But I realize filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew.”
Mel Gibson was approved by the studio behind The Hangover 2, but apparently someone on the cast was offended and went over Phillips’ head. That’s how it reads to me, anyway. I seriously doubt anyone on the crew has the pull needed to drop a name actor from a film, so it had to be one of the actors or producers who got Mel fired. I feel bad for Mel, but selfishly I feel bad for me, because Mel can be hilarious and I think he’d have been perfect in any role in a Todd Phillips movie. Still, hopefully this frees him up for a cameo appearance in the post-apocalyptic sequel Mad Max 4.
