Alexander Corney Piggee had been having a rough couple of weeks, according to coworkers and friends. He had a car wreck, was taking prescription painkillers, and his mother had kicked him out of the house, leaving him homeless. That may have been what caused him to snap. Shortly after 10 AM yesterday morning, he entered a GameStop at the Roseville Galleria Mall, ordered employees out by saying he had a gun and that people were holding his sister hostage (or something equally incoherent), and then Piggee started a fire that destroyed a significant portion of the Roseville Galleria Mall. Earlier in the day, he went to the Walmart where he worked and started a fire there, too.
Piggee (also possibly spelled Pigee) escaped from the scene at the first fire, but not the Galleria fire, which burned out of control for nearly four hours. He was arrested by Roseville, California, police and detained at the scene, being checked out by paramedics before being taken away to jail. The mall’s owners say there is no estimate of the cost of the damage at the Westfield Galleria at Roseville, but it could have an economic impact in the millions of dollars range due to store closures. The 240-store mall was built in 2000 and had a major overhaul in 2008 to bring in luxury stores like Tiffany, Burbury, and Louis Vuitton. Apparently they should’ve added a Fire Extinguisher Warehouse, too.
