There was a three-way tie at the end of regulation, and with darkness encroaching after four playoff holes, Jonathan Byrd knew that the 17th hole of TPC Summerlin was his best chance to win the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals For Children open in Las Vegas, Nevada. Byrd was tied with Martin Laird and Cameron Percy until he hit his tee short on the par-3, 204-yard hole. Jonathan Byrd hit a historic ace to win the Shriners Open, making him the first man to ever hit a hole-in-one to win a PGA event.
“I thought I hit it too good,” said Byrd, a South Carolina native. “I thought I hit it too far, and I couldn’t see anything. But to hear the reaction as it went in, I was just in shock. You’re not really sure until you go down there and look in the bottom of the hole. But when everybody was yelling and screaming, then I knew.”
Incredible. With all the weird things that happen on the golf course, I can’t believe nobody has ever aced the winning shot to win a tournament before now. Kudos to Byrd for his awesomely lucky achievement.
