There’s just something about Lady Gaga. Since the artist, born Stefani Germanotta, burst onto the music scene with her mixture of baroque pop and overt weirdness, she’s been the queen of music videos. Now, the queen has earned her crown. Lady Gaga has become the first artist to reach 1 billion views on YouTube over the weekend. This makes her the most popular artist on YouTube, but she won’t be there for long.
Nipping at Lady Gaga’s patent-leather platform heels? Why, Justin Bieber, of course. Who else would it be? Justin Bieber is the YouTube generation; his entire career is due to being discovered on YouTube by Scooter Braun and Usher. He is expected to pass both Gaga and 1 billion views on November 1, 2010.
If you can say one thing about Lady Gaga, it’s that she’s really embraced the lost art of the music video. Like her or not, her videos are incredible. Considering MTV doesn’t play music videos anymore, to sink that kind of money into what is basically a YouTube advertising campaign is incredible, but she’s proven that it’s a great investment. Just look at how well she’s doing what with the concert tours, YouTube milestones, and being one of the world’s most powerful women.
