Forget the olden days, when they key to drinking was a nice alcopop. These days, the kids are getting loco. Actually, they’re getting Loko, thanks to an alcohol-laced energy drink called Four Loko. Each 23-ounce can of Four Loko contains as much alcohol as a six pack of beer laced with several shots of espresso. It sounds incredible, and that’s why 9 college students at a party in Roslyn, Washington, were hospitalized after drinking Four Loko.
The 9 students from Central Washington University were pounding Loko at what had to be an epic house party. Initially, the sick students were thought to have been slipped a date-rape drug, but it was just Four Loko doing its thing. There’s a reason it’s known as “blackout in a can,” after all. The 9 hospitalized had blood alcohol levels between 0.12 and 0.3; the legal limit in Washington is 0.08.
If there’s one thing you can say as a result of all this news about Four Loko and its 12% ABV energy booze, it’s that all these reports about how dangerous and potent the drink is have just sent sales through the roof. Remember the old days when kids just drank beer, or Red Bull and vodka? Yeah, we’re living in weird times, kids.
