The Android smartphone OS has been one of the things in the smartphone marketplace to even get close to putting a scare into Apple. Google has been one of Apple’s most successful competitors, and the way in which the Android OS has been adopted by the smartphone development community and the smartphone using community has been a real thorn in Apple’s side. Now, the Android Market has topped the 100,000 apps milestone.
When you compare Android’s 100,000 apps to Apple’s iTunes store and its estimated 280,000 apps, it’s clear that Android’s got a lot of catching up to do, but given the way Android is gaining market share, the idea that anyone would catch up to Apple in the smartphone world seems less implausible than it did 6 months ago. Given that other Android competitors don’t even have an app marketplace, it’s clear that Android’s aiming to dominate the phone OS war.
Apple has the lead, but you can’t lean on a lead forever.
