It’s been a process nearly 35 years in the making. In 1975, a German company started to build the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant. Some 35 years and a revolution later, and Iran is scheduled to finally bring the Bushehr plant online, helping Iran transition from an oil-rich power to an oil-rich power with nuclear energy capabilities. Workers have started loading nuclear fuel into the Bushehr nuclear power facility, with the goal of bringing its 1000 megawatts of power online as soon as it is fully loaded.
“Iran’s peaceful nuclear programs and activities are going on as scheduled,” reaffirmed Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast. “The Bushehr nuclear power plant is one of the major projects of Iran which will help produce alternative forms of energy. Political pressures, like sanctions and other pressures, will not impede our progress on development and will not keep our nation from exercising their inalienable rights to peaceful use of nuclear technology.”
The West fears that Iran will use their power plant not for actually powering the nation, but developing nuclear materials for bomb making and other war-like behavior. Rumor has it a computer worm was developed to attack the power plant, causing the delay in opening the facility. Iran already has an extensive network of hydroelectric dams, a biomass incinerator, and a geothermal plant.
