It’s not often I feel really sorry for a country, but Indonesia has to be one of the most unfortunate places on earth right now, and both of the events are completely out of their hands. On Monday, an underwater earthquake triggered a massive tsunami that killed 150 people on the Mentawai Islands west of Sumatra. Meanwhile, on the island of Java, a volcano called Mount Merapi erupted, killing 26 people. Indonesia is dealing with two disasters at once, on opposite sides of the country.
Yeesh, when it rains it pours. We know how devastating a tsunami can be, and we know how devastating a volcano can be, but to have to deal with both of them at once? Time to pack up the canned food and head to the nearest underground disaster shelter. I have to wonder if both events were triggered by the same underwater earthquake. Earthquakes are a sign of plates moving under the earth’s surface, which can awaken a volcano or cause a tsunami.
