Well, it was inevitable that this would happen for a variety of reasons. Syfy, looking to replicate its runaway hit Battlestar Galactica with more Galactica-universe programming, greenlit Caprica to great fanfare and lots of hope for its success. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, the intelligent, slow-moving, idea-centric drama didn’t reasonate with Syfy’s viewers to the numbers Syfy had hoped for. The fact the show only got 6 episodes before taking an extended break didn’t help. Syfy has pulled the plug on Caprica, only to pick up fellow BSG spin-off Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome.
Syfy has learned from its mistake. Blood and Chrome won’t be a thoughtful sci-fi drama like Caprica, it’ll be a thoughtful action series like the original BSG. It follows the career of 20-something pilot William “Husker” Adama during the first Cylon War. The hope seems to be that dogfights and action will help move the show along faster than Caprica‘s slow pace, philosophical bent, and multiple plot threads.
The remaining episodes of Caprica have been pulled from the schedule; Syfy expects to burn them off sometime next year.
