Grant Morrison, comics author and Scotsman, has been doing some great things with the Batman franchise while he’s been at the helm. Among the many changes he’s made is Bruce Wayne’s coming out of the closet. No, not like Bert; more like Iron Man. In the movie, Tony Stark holds a press conference to tell the world that he’s Iron Man. In the final panels of Morrison’s Batman And Robin #16, Bruce Wayne calls a press conference to address some rumors regarding Batman and links himself with Gotham’s masked vigilante. “Some of you may have wondered … how does a man like Batman afford to constantly update his crime-fighting technology? Where does his money come from?” Bruce admits, in a coy half-truth, “Well, the answer is me.”
The goal isn’t to tinker with Batman mythology, but to throw the media off the trail of Bruce Wayne. “We’ve sidetracked the media that he has actually been financing Batman all these years,” explained Morrison explained of his Batman story arc, which has seen former Robin Dick Grayson take up the Bat-mantle. “He is the man behind the Batman, but he is not Batman.” Bruce’s latest plan for Batman? Bat-franchises, all throughout the world. Bruce’s goal is a “global, international army of Batmen. Batman in China, Batman in Japan, Batman in Russia. Expanding the Batman brand to areas where he really hasn’t been before.”
The full details of the international brotherhood of Batmen will be announced in the first issue of Morrison’s latest book, Batman Incorporated.
