The winds of change might have been blowing from coast to coast, but in one particular senate race, the more things change the more they stay the same. Senator Lisa Murkowski, a Republican senator from Alaska, lost her party’s primary race to Sarah Palin-backed Tea Party candidate Joe Miller, but she didn’t give up. Now, Murkowski is slated to become the first write-in candidate to win a US Senate seat since Strom Thurmond in 1956, assuming the vote counters are accurate.
While Murkowski didn’t win her party’s nod, she didn’t give up, going from door to door and house to house, holding rallies, giving out bracelets, and generally trading on her family name to remind people that she’s been the state’s Senator for years and is still very well known and respected in Washington circles. Thanks to her tireless efforts, the write-in candidate won 41 percent of votes, versus Miller’s 34 percent and Democrat Scott McAdams’ 24 percent. She thoroughly refudiated rumors of her demise.
Counting the votes will take weeks, and will likely devolve into a big political and legal conflict unless everyone who voted for her spelled Murkowski right (which is not the case for even simple names). Still, Alaska just might have made history here.
