Someone call Dog the Bounty Hunter, there’s an animal torturer on the loose and Monterey, California-based WildRescue wants him or her tracked down. WildRescue, a wildlife rescue organization, has offered up a $2000 bounty for whoever catches the person putting beer can collars on seagulls in San Francisco. Two of the birds have been spotted at various locations near San Francisco Bay, including at Half Moon Bay, Fisherman’s Wharf, and Alcatraz Island. These birds have it tough enough without people deliberately being cruel to them.
“I feel pretty confident that if word gets around, we’ll be able to find the birds and help them,” Dmytryk said. “I’m also hopeful that we’ll track down the perpetrator, maybe even through fingerprints. But, just that people are watching, and there’s a bounty, maybe that’s enough to get them to stop torturing animals.”
Doing things like this is a federal crime, punishable by imprisonment, fines, or both. WildRescue has set up a dedicated pager and email account to track down the person slipping the collars on the seagulls. Anyone who spots one of the birds is encouraged to call 831-429-2323 or email rescue@wildrescue.org.
