One of the many things my dad has told me is to watch out for cops at the end of every month, because that’s when they’re out in force to make their quota of tickets for the month. Police departments deny it, states have laws against it, but the rumor never dies. Now, after a monthly quota sheet was discovered in the roll call room of the 77th Precinct in Brooklyn, New York, it appears as though the police quota system is another true conspiracy theory.
Meanwhile, all sides of the issue are rushing to distance themselves from the quota sheet. NYPD spokesman Paul Browne blamed one of the individual officers at the 77th, saying “If it were an authorized posting, it would indicate by the authority of the commanding officer. This was neither authorized nor compelled.” Police union spokesman Al O’Leary was quick to pass the buck in the other direction, saying, “There is no reason for one of our members to put up something like this.”
I have no doubt that this information came from higher ups, and it was unofficially posted by the station’s higher-ups as a reminder of the department’s “productivity” requirement for beat cops. After all, in these lean times, police departments have to make their money and keep paying for those expensive new ghost cruisers.
