To a round of applause and lots of happy prayers, the 22,000-strong Polish town of Swiebodzin has put the finishing touches on one of the most unusual feats of engineering constructed in modern times. It’s a gigantic statue of Jesus that some say is the world’s largest statue of Christ. The stone statue was so heavy that special cranes had to be brought in to assemble the final pieces of the puzzle, including a glittering golden crown on the top of his massive stone head.
The statue is the brainchild of 78-year-old priest Reverend Sylwester Zawadzki, who says that the statue is 33 meters, or 108 feet, tall. That’s one meter for every year of Jesus’s life. However, other members of the construction crew say that the statue of Christ is actually 167 feet tall from the base of the statue to the top of his head, which would indeed make it the world’s largest statue of Jesus. Rio’s iconic Christ the Redeemer statue is only 125 feet tall. Either way, the giant Jesus is expected to turn Swiebodzin into a tourist attraction, which thrills both Catholics and atheists alike.
“I have never been as happy as I am today,” said Father Zawadzki, who is called ‘the builder priest’ by the people of Swiebodzin after building two churches, this statue, and several other buildings in the town. “This is the culmination of my life’s work as a priest. I felt inspired to fulfill Jesus’ will, and today I give thanks to him for allowing me to fulfill his will.”
