It’s tough to find a good doctor these days. When you’re a village of about 2200 people in the German countryside, it’s even harder. The town of Lette, Germany, has been without a general practitioner since their last doctor retired in September, and the villagers are not having much luck luring a doctor into their town. However, the village has a novel idea to win a doctor over: free stuff. The townsfolk of Lette are coming together to bribe a doctor to come to their village, using free sausages, a free hotel stay, free bread, free hair cuts, and free flowers, among other things.
The bribery movement is the brainchild of the local butcher, Niko Ringhoff. “Everybody wants to do something to help get a doctor,” Ringhoff told Reuters. “We all want to give him a warm welcome and make sure he feels at home here. We desperately need a doctor, but it’s difficult to attract one to the countryside.”
A whole slate of freebies is a great start when it comes to recruiting a new anything, but especially a doctor. As any pharmaceutical rep could tell you, doctors love free stuff. Especially free sausage; given all the boars in Germany, it’s a natural way to put that pork to use!
