Google is a great place to work. I’ve never worked there, I don’t know anyone that does work there, but I guarantee you it’s a great place to work, because at the moment, Google is one of the few employers that is making money in spite of the recession. I know they’re making good money thanks to Android and their ad sales, because Google is going to give its entire workforce, from janitor to CEO, a 10 percent pay raise.
This is all part of Google’s attempt at changing the way they do business while still retaining employees. It’s also part of the company’s attempt to move past the world of yearly bonuses to a more controlled, measured release of cash throughout the year, as worker bonuses will be eased into paychecks throughout the year. The bonuses will not count as part of the 10 percent pay raise. Google has also decided that pay raises were more practical and important than more stock options, since Google’s stock has stabilized in price. Google has added 3500 employees this year.
“While we don’t typically comment on internal matters, we do believe that competitive compensation plans are important to the future of the company,” said Google spokesman Jordan Newman in statement. Google CEO Eric Schmidt did not mention Facebook in his discussions of the pay increases, though the elephant is always in the room.
