What’s a good way to earn yourself jail time? Well, if you’re Joshua Simon Ashby, a 20-year-old New Zealander, here’s what you do. You date a girl on and off for about five months, then when she’s finally through with you, you completely flip out. You damage two of her dresses, you threaten to kill her via text message, you knock her down and break her cell phone, and for the icing on the cake, you hack into her Facebook account and put up nude pictures of her for all her friends and family to see. Posting his ex’s naked pictures on Facebook earned Ashby 4 months in jail.
That charge, distributing indecent material, is what earned Ashby 4 months in jail and a stern reprimand from Judge Andrew Becroft. “Technology can’t be used in this way,” quoth the white-wigged judge. (Australia may or may not have white-wigged judges, but I want them to so I’m pretending they do.)
This is believed to be the first time a person has gone to jail for using Facebook in such a manner. Facebook poking is now considered a violation of a restraining order. Facebook and its photo pages can be useful and fun, you just have to be careful nobody catches you cheating on your disability claim.
