When Prince William popped the question to long-time girlfriend Kate Middleton, he knew of only one ring to do it with, and I’m not talking about the One Ring, Frodo. I’m talking about his mother’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring, last seen in 1996. William gave Kate Princess Diana’s engagement ring while on a safari in Kenya; but to this observer what’s seen as a sweet, romantic gesture is a death sentence.
“It’s my mother’s engagement ring, so of course it’s very special to me, and Kate’s now very special to me, so it was only right to put the two together,” said William.
And that, in and of itself, is why giving Kate Diana’s ring is a horrible, horrible idea. Does he not remember his parents marriage? Or their divorce? Or, and I hate to bring this up, Diana’s horrible car wreck? Giving your fiancée your divorced mother’s engagement ring is like giving her a cursed cell phone or the Amityville Horror house.
Some things are just bad ideas, and this is one of them. Maybe that makes me a superstitious, unromantic killjoy, but let’s be honest ladies: do you want a cursed ring?
