Not content to leave the shopping game to the likes of eBay and Amazon, Google has decided to enter the crowded world of e-commerce, but they won’t be opening up a store front any time soon. Instead, Google is launching a fashion and shopping website called Boutiques.com, which basically acts as a middle man between the web surfer and the preexisting e-commerce website for various fashion labels.
If you’re looking for a black, one-shoulder dress, you punch that into Boutiques.com‘s home page, then search. Using a combination of human curators, visual recognition, and search algorithms, Boutiques.com finds that same color and style across a variety of shopping websites, similar to Like.com (which Google bought for $100 million dollars in August). Google funnels the traffic to the listed stores in exchange for placement fees, pay-per-clicks, or a kick-back on purchases. Google consulted with a hundred hip fashion designers, retailers, and celebrities to help determine just what is stylish and how to organize fashions.
Unfortunately for fashion-conscious fellas and international jet-setters, Boutique.com currently only works with women, and is only operational in the United States. It is expected to expand in the future.
