It’s not out yet, but the moment it comes out, look for your Facebook account to be inundated with messages. That’s how Zynga’s runaway hit game, FarmVille, spread amongst users of the world’s most popular social network and how Zynga launched a multimillion dollar per year business as the kingpin of social network gaming. From FarmVille to Mafia Wars and FrontierVille, Zynga has been the only company able to use Facebook as a distribution platform for its software, and that’s not expected to change as Zynga is getting set to launch CityVille, its latest Facebook game, first 3-D game, and first global launch.
According to longtime venture capitalist John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Zynga is the most profitable and fastest-growing start-up company he’s ever put money into (at this stage of its life), and he’s pumped money into early versions of Google, Amazon, Sun Microsystems, and Netscape. The key is their successful use of Facebook to sell its product, said fellow venture capitalist Fred Wilson of Union Square Ventures. “Only one great company has gotten built on top of the Facebook platform, and that’s Zynga.”
It’s mind-boggling, isn’t it? Zynga has built a business, and they don’t even have a way to distribute their product! They are functioning in symbiosis with Facebook, and both parties profit. Facebook gets people to stay on their site for hours, Zynga gets paid, and everybody wins.
