The Davenport family of St. Petersburg, Florida, might just be the thriftiest family in the United States. Tired of missing out on the best Black Friday shopping deals, the Davenports are taking a classic idea to extremes. The Davenports are camping out in front of their local Best Buy in Tyrone Square, a week before Black Friday actually happens. That’s gotten them national media attention AND a special award from Best Buy for being the “First Family Of Black Friday.”
“We’re here really early this year because we’ve always been second, third and fourth and down the line,” said family spokeswoman Lorie Davenport. “We’re tired of not being first and we figured we’ve put in six years, we want to be first.”
That’s a noble goal. The Davenports will be taking turns at the Best Buy campground, to prevent epic stink development and to give other family members a chance to earn their keep. It seems extreme to me to save a little money, but I guess if the deal is good enough, it’s worth it to save some scratch on a new used laptop and an Amazon Kindle.
