Brad Childress took over for Mike Tice in 2006, part of the new regime that came into Minnesota when owner Zygi Wilf came on board. Now, Wilf is still around, but Brad Childress not so much. The 3-7 Minnesota Vikings have fired head coach Brad Childress, elevating defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier to interim head coach for the remainder of the season. The Vikings have struggled all season long, despite trading for Randy Moss (then releasing him four games later) and talking Hall of Fame Quarterback Brett Favre out of retirement during the off-season.
The NFL is generally a league in which coaches finish a season before being fired, but this is twice this year that a head coach has been fired in mid-season. The Cowboys fired former coach Wade Phillips earlier this year and have found a spark of life under former offensive coordinator Jason Garrett; I imagine the Wilfs hope that the Vikings can be similarly inspired by their former defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier. As for Frazier, it couldn’t happen to a better, more qualified guy. He’s one of the best defensive minds in the NFL, and he’s been head-coach-ready for a long, long time. It’s just a shame he’s getting such an awful football team.
