It was a 100-year-old house sitting at 18 Elm Street in Potsdam, New York. Aside from its relative age, it’s pretty unremarkable except for one little factoid. It inspired one of the longest-running and most-popular horror movie series in filmdom. That house at 18 Elm was Wes Craven’s inspiration for A Nightmare on Elm Street. Unfortunately, movie popularity couldn’t save the home, and the inspiration for Freddy Krueger and company was torn down this week.
The house needed up to a million dollars in restoration. Since it was owned by the city, they decided it would be better to simply tear down the restoration nightmare and build a new municipal building on the property. The home’s thousands of Facebook fans were no match for the forces of entropy and change. Not even Freddy Krueger can stand in the way of progress.
