Every two years, England and Australia play one of the oldest and most prestigious cricket matches in a series that has become known as The Ashes. Given Australia’s love of micro-blogging sporting events, it’s not a stretch to believe that hundreds or thousands of cricket fans are tweeting about The Ashes. However, thanks to a case of mistaken identity, an unnamed US woman who uses the Twitter handle @theashes has found herself in the middle of a viral campaign. Australian companies like Qantas and Vodaphone want to Get The Ashes To The Ashes. Rather than using the hashtags #theashes or #ashes, cricket fans have been sending tweets to @theashes by mistake.
You have to pity the poor woman, who normally tweets about Glee and knitting. She admits to knowing nothing about cricket in her tweets since she became the center of a viral firestorm. Still, that hasn’t stopped an Australian Ford dealership from offering her use of a car, Vodaphone from offering her tickets and a mobile phone to use for Tweeting while at The Ashes, or Qantas from offering free travel to Australia. She’s holding out for a second ticket for her boyfriend before taking up the offer.
Not a bad deal for a woman whose original response to her Ashes to Ashes mix-up was to e-shout, “I AM NOT A FREAKING CRICKET MATCH!!!”
