Willie Nelson is a country music legend with dozens of hit songs either as a writer, performer, or both. He’s sold millions upon millions of albums, and the Red Headed Stranger is beloved by music fans world wide. Despite all of his success, there are two things Willie Nelson can’t do. He can’t pay his taxes, and he can’t stop smoking the reefer. Over Thanksgiving weekend, Willie Nelson was arrested for possession of marijuana after being stopped by Border Patrol agents in Sierra Blanca, Texas. A search of Nelson’s bus, Honeysuckle Rose III, revealed 6 ounces of marijuana which Nelson admitted were his.
“It’s kind of surprising, but I mean we treat him like anybody else,” said Hudspeth County sheriff Arvin West. “He could get 180 days in county jail. If he does, I’m going to make him cook and clean.” Said Nelson’s longtime harmonica player, Mickey Raphael, “He (Willie) said he feels great — he lost six ounces.”
Nelson has long been a supporter of decriminalizing marijuana. Said Willie in 2008, “It’s a matter of time, a matter of education, a matter of people finding out what cannabis, marijuana is for, why it grows out of the ground and why it’s prescribed as one of the greatest stress medicines on the planet.”
