Pablo Picasso was one of the most prolific artists of all time, putting out hundreds of works in a wide variety of styles. He was also notoriously generous, giving paintings away to friends and family members, even after he became a world-renowned artist. However, was the legendary artist so generous as to give several hundred of his pieces away to his electrician? That’s the story Pierre Le Guennec is telling Claude Picasso, after Picasso’s former electrician brought hundreds of Picasso drawings to Paris to be appraised by the Picasso Foundation.
“It’s Madame (Picasso) who gave them. But if Madame gave them, Monsieur was aware of it. She wasn’t going to do it just like that, was she?” asked the electrician in question. “What did you want me to do with them? … They stayed in a box with other boxes that I have, from my job.”
The crucial aspect of this is the fact that, according to the Picasso Foundation, the art pieces are undated. Hence, they may or may not be authentic, and they may or may not be stolen. “I felt a great surprise, naturally, lots of emotion at the discovery of pieces with which we were not familiar. But also a deep disturbance,” said Picasso’s son Claude. “Many of these pieces were not dated, which means they never should have left the studio.”
