Every year, prostate cancer affects hundreds of thousands of men throughout the world. Last year, 913,000 new cases were discovered, and thousands of those unfortunate men died. When it comes to detecting prostate cancer, the only option is a very invasive test in a very personal area that makes the TSA enhanced pat-down look like a handshake. However, researchers have discovered an important connection between finger length and prostate cancer. If your index finger is longer than your ring finger, you are significantly less likely to develop prostate cancer.
“This exciting finding means that finger pattern could potentially be used to select at-risk men for ongoing screening, perhaps in combination with other factors such as family history or genetic testing,” said Professor Ros Eeles, one of the researchers from the University of Warwick and the Institute of Cancer Research who collaborated on the study. In a study of 3000 healthy men versus 1500 prostate cancer survivors, hand comparisons guided researchers to the correlation between the index finger and prostate health. Finger length is determined by the amount of testosterone the baby is exposed to in the womb; those with longer index fingers than ring fingers were exposed to less testosterone.
“This research brings us another step closer to helping determine risk factors for prostate cancer, which is possibly the biggest issue in current thinking about preventing and treating the disease,” said Emma Halls, CEO of Prostate Action. “However, we are still a long way from reducing the number of men who die of prostate cancer every year and need more research and education in all areas to achieve this.”
