The beautiful beaches of Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, are a tourist haven. When the weather in Europe turns frightful, the tourists flock to this little haven on the Red Sea for sun, sand, and surf. It’s the last aspect, surf, where the vacations of four Europeans turned into a disaster. Sharm el-Sheikh has been the epicenter of a series of shark attacks, in which four tourists were mauled by a pair of hungry sharks.
Fortunately, Egyptian fishermen believe they have caught the beasts responsible, a Mako shark and an Oceanic White Tip shark, weighing between 330 and 550 pounds and between 7 and 8 feet in length. The tourists attacked were three Russians and a Ukranian. The attacks were so sudden and so vicious that authorities actually closed down the beaches until the beasts were captured.
The behavior is uncharacteristic of those breeds of shark, say spokesmen for Sharm el-Sheikh. “Usually these kinds of sharks don’t attack human beings but sometimes they have trouble with their nervous system and they accidentally go after people,” said the spokesman. Hopefully, this puts an end to the Red Sea shark attacks.
