A 14-year-old boy named Edgar, AKA El Ponchis or The Cloak, has been arrested by Mexican authorities while at the airport with his sister, trying to get on a flight to Tijuana so he could cross the border into the United States. What’s the unusual thing about a teenager getting arrested? El Ponchis is accused of having beheaded four people while working as a teenage hitman for a Mexican drug cartel.
“I participated in four executions, but I did it drugged and under threat that if I didn’t, they would kill me,” said El Ponchis after he was handed over to federal prosecutors on Friday.
Complicating matters is the fact that El Ponchis was born in the United States, though he’s lived in the Morelos city of Cuernavaca (where he was arrested) since age four. According to Mexican authorities, Edgar was working as a hitman for the Cartel of the South Pacific, a branch of the Beltran Leyva gang, when he committed his multiple murders. His status as a US citizen has not been confirmed; he and his sister were trying to flee Mexico and stay with his stepmother in San Diego.
