What was originally supposed to be a brief maintenance period has stretched on, and on, and on, as popular blogging service Tumblr has been offline all night. It’s actually been offline since about 6 PM yesterday. The culprit is some routine maintenance gone horribly wrong, according to Tumblr, which forced them to take a critical database cluster offline. Since then, the site, and all the Tumblogs on it, have been unavailable.
Said a Tumblr spokesperson on Twitter, “We’re working quickly to recover from a major issue in one of our database clusters. We’re incredibly sorry for the inconvenience.”
I’m sure they’ve been working through the night on the issue, and as someone who has had my own share of issues with database problems, hosting capacity, and whatnot, I can completely empathize. I’ve been there, and I didn’t like it. Granted, my problems weren’t as far-reaching as theirs have been (thank goodness!) but any technical problem knocking a site offline is an irritant, especially considering how dedicated Tumblr users are.
