Douglas Allen Smith Jr. must be a huge fan of the television show Chuck.  I don’t know his viewing habits, but consider the facts.  Douglas Allen Smith was bored with his bland collection of names, so he took a cue from the Chuck character Dr. Devon “Captain Awesome” Woodcomb.  Douglas Smith isn’t becoming a doctor; Douglas Smith is become Captain Awesome.

That’s right, the former Douglas Allen Smith Jr. has officially changed his name to Captain Awesome.  Awesome, from Portland, Oregon, went before the Lane County Circuit Court and officially had his name changed to Captain Awesome in front of a judge named Douglas Mitchell, which gave Awesome a little twinge of worry.  TV’s Captain Awesome is a doctor; Portland’s Captain Awesome is an out-of-work cabinet installer.

“The first thing he said to me was that he thought Douglas was a perfectly honorable first name,” said the former Douglas Smith.  “I thought, ‘Oh my goodness — I’m screwed.'”  Still, Awesome won the day, and won a victory for fans of hilarious new names everywhere.  “I just thought it was really funny that Devon’s father always called him Captain Awesome because ‘a poor nickname builds good character.'”
