In 2004, everyone thought Elizabeth Edwards, wife of vice presidential candidate John Edwards, was in the process of beating breast cancer. Unfortunately, that was not the case. In 2007 she announced that the cancer had spread to her bones. Now, the cancer has apparently spread to her liver. Doctors have advised Elizabeth Edwards to end her fight against cancer, as she is too physically weak and ill to benefit from the aggressive radiation treatments needed to fight her disease.
“Elizabeth has been advised by her doctors that further treatment of her cancer would be unproductive. She is resting at home with family and friends,” said a press release from the Edwards family.
It’s a pretty safe bet to assume that she’s only got a few month months left to live. When doctors tell you to cease treatment of anything, that’s a good sign that the battle is over, for better or worse. For Mrs. Edwards and her children, the result of this battle is worse. It’s a shame, but it just goes to show you that cancer is no joke. No matter how much money you’ve got to fight the battle, you’re not guaranteed to win.
I’ve had several family members and close friends fight cancer, and so far they’re all winning. I know how lucky they are (and I am) that they’re beating their disease. Here’s hoping they keep beating the odds.
