When the right-wing fringe group the English Defense League was set to demonstrate in Birmingham, England, police officials knew they’d need to rally the troops. Generally, demonstrations usually lead to counter-demonstrations, and that leads to the potential for violence. Birmingham raised 100 police officers in riot gear and had them police the demonstration. Little did they know the real danger wasn’t from the fascists, but from the catering. Of the 100 officers, 47 cops were made sick by tainted chicken and tuna sandwiches provided by a local cafe.
Muriel Morris, 70, was the owner and operator of Birmingham’s Meal Machine Cafe. Meal Machine Cafe is where the cops got their catered lunches with a side of staphylococcus aureus, better known as staph infections. Some of the police were made so ill that they required hospitalization and oxygen; others passed out from discomfort. As for Muriel, she’s getting a four month suspended sentence with an electronic ankle bracelet and an overnight curfew in response to her accidental food poisoning via unclean meat.
Really, she’s lucky no one died. Staph infections are not something to be trifled with.
